It’s hard to believe that we’re halfway through November. As the days and weather turn shorter and cooler respectively, I find warmth in the coziness that the season brings. There’s nothing quite as comforting as chili and fires and big sweaters. And although we aren’t quite there yet… it’s still something to look forward to.
It is always necessary to have things in your “fun locker” to look forward to. My friend Michelle and I coined this phrase many years ago… this alluded to our annual shopping trip to Chicago. The day’s highlight is always the infamous Jayson Warehouse Sale. The phrase stuck because it’s true...without at least something to look forward to, the routine can become a complete grind.
Last week was a Trove highlight… we received incredible pieces from a number of our makers. To have packages from many places including Lithuania and France and Columbia, among others, waiting on my doorstep was beyond exciting. I could barely wait to unpack the carefully packaged boxes; and once unwrapped, it was so exciting to actually feel the objects. I’d spent months and months building Trove with little tangible data to rely upon; however holding Ilona and Nathalee and Alvar’s pieces reinforced that my makers are indeed extraordinary. Each piece felt substantial, and seeing brushstrokes and fingerprints in the material and glaze pointed to the handmade nature of each and every piece.
I can’t say that I have a favorite… (even though it’s something that I hate hearing restaurant servers say when you ask them, “What’s your favorite dish on the menu?”) I don’t have a favorite because within the world of art, there are so many different definitions for beauty. I can honestly say that some mornings I’m drawn to Lucia’s black vessel that is heavy and elegant and functional; other mornings it is the simplicity of GZ’s pieces that call my name as I watch for color variations with the sun shining off the sophisticated stand.
I am so excited to receive more treasures this week… a shipment from Germany and one from Portugal is en route. Who knew there was so much anticipation in validation?
