Sofia Águas

Her ceramic practice began in 2013 after relocating with her family to Santiago, Chile. What started as a personal pursuit to cultivate focus and balance became a turning point, reconnecting her with the knowledge of the hand and the expressive potential of clay. Time spent in Madrid, Belfast, and Cardiff further expanded her understanding of material culture, shaping a distinctive practice grounded in materiality, restraint, and presence. Rather than imposing predetermined forms, she develops each piece through an ongoing dialogue with clay, allowing its inherent qualities and responses to inform the making process. Her work occupies the space between function and sculpture, where tactility, balance, and emotional resonance play a central role.
A researcher and professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, with a background in product design and co-design, she currently lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal.

Why we love Sofia Águas

We love Sofia Aguas because her work captures the quiet poetry of nature. Inspired by the landscapes, coastlines, and organic forms of her native Portugal, she creates sculptural ceramics that feel both grounded and ethereal. Every curve, texture, and subtle variation reflects a thoughtful dialogue between earth and hand, resulting in pieces that invite a closer look.

What draws us most to Sofia's work is its sense of calm. Her vessels don't demand attention... they earn it through understated beauty, refined craftsmanship, and an appreciation for imperfection. Each piece feels timeless, bringing warmth and a natural elegance to contemporary interiors while honoring the enduring traditions of handmade ceramics.

Sofia reminds us that the most meaningful objects are often the quietest ones, those that enrich a space not through excess, but through authenticity, materiality, and a deep connection to the natural world.
