Being Here

Sale price$1,755

Being Here is hand-built from reclaimed black grogged clay that is left raw in texture. The collection of seven differently shaped vessels highlights the raw and organic texture of the material while playing with undulating and enveloping volumes. The Luna Series is a collection of luminous sculptures that explore the relationship between form, material, and light. The interplay between opaque surfaces and diffused light invites contemplation of the subtle interaction between shadow and clarity. Being Here was inspired by traditional artisanal techniques where ancestral craftsmanship are merged with a contemporary vision.

About the Maker

Sofia Águas

Sofia Águas ceramic practice began in 2013 after relocating with her family to Santiago, Chile. What started as a personal pursuit to cultivate focus and balance became a turning point, reconnecting her with the knowledge of the hand and the expressive potential of clay. Time spent in Madrid, Belfast, and Cardiff further expanded Sofia's understanding of material culture, shaping a distinctive practice grounded in materiality, restraint, and presence. Rather than imposing predetermined forms, Sofia develops each piece through an ongoing dialogue with clay, allowing its inherent qualities and responses to inform the making process. Sofia's work occupies the space between function and sculpture, where tactility, balance, and emotional resonance play a central role.
A researcher and professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, with a background in product design and co-design, Sofia currently lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal.
