Loutrophoros

Sale price$2,130

This piece was inspired by a type of amphora called a loutrophoros. A loutrophoros (Ancient Greek: λουτροφόρος; Greek etymology: λουτρόν/loutron and φέρω/pherō, English translation: "bathwater" and "carry") is a distinctive type of Greek pottery characterized by an elongated neck with two handles. The loutrophoros was used to carry water for a bride's pre-nuptial ritual bath; it was also used in funeral rituals, and was placed in the tombs of the unmarried. There are 6 homemade glazes poured on the surface of this piece reacting and melting to 1240 °C. This hand built vessel was created using black clay and finished off with 6 glazed poured on the surface for a reactive finish. The piece was fired to 1240°C.
