Poplar Centerpiece Tray

Hardwood embers are placed on poplar wood and left to burn the depression into the wood. The piece is scraped and the process is repeated. Then, the whole piece goes back into the fire. The heat and flames dictate the final shape. Pieces are finished with dry-food safe oils and waxes. Tray has a small solid brass of half-sphere accent.

I have been playing with wood since I was about six, and enjoy it now as much as I did then. I find motivation and inspiration in almost everything around me, whether it's a fallen piece of timber in the forest, the shape and movement of a running animal, or the intimate details of an old building. Inspiration is everywhere. Every day is a treasure hunt. My hope is that my work instills a sense of calm and ease; we could all use a little more of both.
