Vythos

Sale price$1,405

Vythos is a distinctive sculptural vessel from Chous Ceramics, offering a profound reflection onThe relationship between solid form and the vastness of the sea. Handbuilt from stoneware clay, the sculpture’s form features strong, horizontal lines that create a sense of balanced stillness. The name, translating from the Greek as "depth," is captured by a deep, dramatic curve in the vessel that reveals an intense, vibrant blue interior. This contrast— between the strong stoneware exterior and the boundless feeling of the color within—explores the mystery of the deep. The interior color is the result of focused studio work and testing. The luminous, saturated blue was achieved through the multi-layer application of terra sigillata slip (a highly refined liquid clay). Fired at 1220C, this process creates a deep color that is a finish which actively catches light... beautifully reflecting the way light fades into the ocean. Vythos moves beyond simple decoration, it is a thoughtful creation showcasing the duality of elements. Vythos reflects Chous Ceramics' commitment to both technical mastery and pure, compelling design.

About the Maker

Chous Ceramics

Chous Ceramics was founded by Despina and Giorgos Chous. The couple is passionate about bringing the beauty of hand-built ceramics to art enthusiasts worldwide. Despite Despina's background in industrial management and banking and Giorgos' background in graphic and web design, they've seamlessly combined their unique skills to create a ceramic studio where art and innovation converge. Despina and Giorgos are inspired by the desire to create truly meaningful pieces.

As their family grew, Despina felt a strong pull towards a more creative and fulfilling life; as such, she left her banking career to pursue her passion for ceramics. With his eye for aesthetics and expertise in design, Giorgos brought a fresh perspective to the handmade pieces. Chous Ceramics opened in the couple's hometown of Sparta, Greece... this felt like the perfect next step! Despina and Giorgos are devoted to creating authentic works of art that celebrate the beauty of nature and human beings' creative spirit.
